Reading Notes: Celtic Fairy Tales (Reading B)


Beth Gellert:
  • Prince Llewelyn had a favorite greyhound and one day he called out to it but it did not come so he headed off to the hunt without him 
  • He headed back from the hunt very angry because he did not have his favorite and fastest hound. At the gate, he saw his hound running towards him 
  • He could not find his son anywhere and only saw much blood so he assumed his hound killed his son so he stuck him hard 
  • Then he heard his child yelling and saw him safe but nearby was the dead body of a wolf 
  • He realized that the hound had saved the baby and killed the wolf but it was too late to save the hound 
  • He was filled with grief and buried the hound near the castle 

The Tale of Ivan: 
  • A man set off to find work and stopped at the house of a farmer
  • They agreed on the wages for the year but at the end of the year, the farmer offered to keep the money in exchange for advice. This happened again the next two years as well
  • The man wanted to return home to his wife but the farmer wanted him to stay so his wife could back a cake for the man to take home to his wife 
  • He stayed and left later with the cake for his wife 
  • Inside the cake, the man had baked them was his wages from the last three years. 

Andrew Coffey: 
  • Andrew Coffey was known as a quiet man and one evening he found himself and his horse lost 
  • He saw a light in the distance and headed toward it and found a cabin so he went in and found a fire burning but there wasn’t anyone there 
  • He heard someone calling his name but could not see anyone 
  • Finally, he saw a man come out but it was a man who had been lost many years ago when he was out fishing so Andrew ran away 
  • The man found him again but Andrew ran into the cabin where he was originally and his until he escaped later 

Brewery of Eggshells: 
  • A woman had twins whom she loved dearly 
  • one day she was called away to the neighbors home but feared the twins safety at home alone 
  • She hurried back and was worried to see some old elves on the path but found her children unharmed when she got home 
  • After some time the people began to suspect something was wrong with the twins because they did not grow at all 
  • The mother sought out a wise man who told her of a way to see if the children would speak to eat other of things children should not know and if they did she needed to throw them into the lake 
  • She did this and heard them speaking and so she threw them into the lake and the goblins took their children back.
