StoryLab Week 14

I really enjoy looking through TV Tropes. I find it such an interesting website and I am such a movie nerd that I can spend hours searching through the pages. Once again, I am going to be looking at the horror tropes, since horror movies are my favorite genre. Here are some of the ones I found the most interesting.

1. Camp Unsafe Isn't Safe Anymore

I love this trope because it is so interesting when an assumed "safe place" is no longer safe anymore. The best part about this trope is that it was never safe, to begin with. A great example of this is any place the people from the Walking Dead decided to call home. As soon as they get settled and it feels like this is where they will stay, something shocking is lurking just beyond and is ready to drive them away.

2. Final Girl

This trope is such a horror classic. The final girl is the last one alive who needs to confront the killer and save the day. The most obvious examples of this would be Sydney from Scream or Laurie from Halloween. The best part about this trope is that it has come with its own set of rules that typically determine who is or is not a final girl. Scream pokes fun at some of these tropes when their resident movie buff decides to teach them how to survive a horror movie.

3. Jump Scares

This is probably what horror movies are most known for and are often debated among horror movie enthusiasts. Some hate the techniques of slowly building suspense and finishing it off with a loud noise. What is most annoying is the false jump scare, in which this same tactic is applied but is followed by something that the audience does not need to fear. For example, closing a door or locker only to be scared by your best friend. This is the most commonly used scare tactic and done correctly can be quite effective.
